Abstract

Haloacetic acids are prepared by a process comprising oxidizing monohaloacetaldehydes which aqueous solutions of hypohalous acid and recovering the haloacetic acids formed. The reaction temperature may be controlled by the rate of addition of the hypohalous acid and the desired product may be recovered from the reacted mixture by extraction with a water-immiscible solvent and distillation. In an example aqueous hypochlorous acid is added to aqueous monochloracetaldehyde and the mixture is allowed to reflux. The product is extracted with ether which is then evaporated to leave monochloroacetic acid. Aqueous solutions of hypobromous or hypoiodous acids may be employed instead of hypochlorous acid solution and bromoacetaldehyde and iodoacetaldehyde respectively are oxidized to bromoacetic and iodoacetic acids. Diluents such as ether, alcohol and benzene may be present.
