Abstract

Ethylene oxide is produced by reacting ethylene with oxygen and water, in presence of one or more of the following metals or their oxides, viz.--antimony, lead, bismuth, silver, arsenic, nickel, tin, gold, copper, iron, with or without the presence of hydrogen. Particular catalyst mixtures mentioned are antimony, lead, nickel, and silver; bismuth, nickel, silver, and lead; antimony, bismuth and nickel; antimony, bismuth and silver; bismuth and nickel; bismuth and silver. The process may be effected at 150--400 DEG C. and 50 kilos per sq. c.m. pressure. In examples (2) a mixture of ethylene, air, water vapour, and hydrogen is passed over silver powder or gauze at 150--400 DEG C.: (3) ethylene is dissolved, in water containing colloidal silver in a pressure tube; the tube is then heated to between 150 DEG and 400 DEG C. and air and hydrogen are slowly introduced.
