Abstract
514,792. Catalysts. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 16, 1938, No. 14562. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Catalysts for the production of olefine oxides from olefines and oxygen are made by. shaping a mixture of finely-divided silver with an organic adhesive. The silver may be activated by a small admixture of gold, copper. iron or manganese. The silver may be prepared by reducing silver solutions as described in Specification 500,382. Suitable binding-agents are solutions of gum arabic, dextrin, sugar, cellulose esters .or ethers or polyvinyl compounds. A paste of silver and organic adhesive may be pressed through holes in a plate, dried and heated in a current of air preferably with the addition of steam, at 200-500‹C., or this pretreatment may be omitted, since the adhesive is destroyed by the oxygen of the reaction mixture. In examples (1) solutions of silver nitrate, copper nitrate, gold chloride and potassium hydroxide are stirred into water so that the potash is always in excess and a solution of formaldehyde and potassium hydroxide is added, the precipitate being made into a paste with gum arabic and shaped : (3) fine silver powder containing a little copper is made into a paste with gum arabic and shaped ; (4) a solution containing silver nitrate, gold chloride and copper nitrate is reduced with hydrazine hydrate, the precipitate being washed with dilute nitric acid, dried, and made into a paste with a cellulose acetate solution in alkyl acetates; (5) silver nitrate solution is precipitated with potassium bicarbonate, reduced with formaldehyde and made into a paste with gum arabic.
