Abstract
500,382. Olefine oxides; catalytic agents. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Oct. 20, 1937, Nos. 28598/37 and 902/38. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group III] Olefine oxides are produced by the oxidation of olefines with oxygen in the presence of catalysts obtained by reducing solutions or suspensions of silver compounds with or without the presence of compounds of other metals such as gold or copper. Suitable reducing agents are hydrazine, formaldehyde, glucose, hydroxylamine and phenylhydrazine. The catalysts may be etched with dilute nitric acid. In examples : (1) a catalyst is prepared by precipitating a silver nitrate solution with potassium carbonate and reducing with potassium hydroxide and formaldehyde; 200 parts of air and 5 of ethylene are passed over this catalyst at 240-260‹ C., or 62À5 parts of ethylene, 80 of steam and 10-20 of air may be used at 210-240‹ C.; (3) silver nitrate solution is treated with hydrazine hydrate and the washed precipitate is treated for some minutes with nitric acid of 2 per cent; (4) a solution of silver nitrate containing a little copper nitrate and gold chloride is treated with hydrazinc hydrate while cooling with ice; the mixture is boiled till nitrogen is no longer evolved and the washed precipitate treated with nitric acid of 4 per cent; this catalyst is used with a mixture of ethylene, air and steam ; (7) a solution of silver nitrate containing copper nitrate and gold chloride is precipitated with potassium hydroxide and reduced with glucose, the washed precipitate being treated with nitric acid of 4 per cent; this catalyst is used with a mixture of ethylene, air and steam in the ratio 1 : 10 : 30 at 250-350‹ C. The process may be effected in a porcelain or silver tube.
