Abstract

297,375. Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., and Alexander, T. J. R. June 20, 1927. Explosives.-The double-decomposition of sodium perchlorate and ammonium nitrate is performed by the reaction of concentrated solutions of these salts at high temperatures, about 140‹ C. or lower, but still high. The product is precipitated as a thick paste and by stirring during the cooling the heat of crystallization evaporates off much of the residual water, leaving a very intimate mixture of ammonium perchlorate and sodium nitrate which requires very little drying, and after final drying is suitable for use in explosives. Reference is made to Specification 131,388, which describes a similar double-decomposition at a preferable temperature of 15‹ C. to 50‹ C.
