Abstract
Potassium chloride is converted to potassium nitrate by p treatment at ordinary or higher temperatures with nitrogen oxides, and the issuing gases are reacted with sodium nitrate or mixtures of salts containing it at elevated temperatures, say at 300 DEG C., to yield sodium chloride, and nitrogen oxides for further use in the process. Caliche may be used as the source of sodium nitrate.
