Abstract
A mixture of methane and hydrogen containing up to 60 per cent of hydrogen for the autogeneous treatment of metals is obtained by a single or repeated application of heat for a short period, say, for a number of seconds, to methane or to a gas containing methane. Temperatures of 900-1200 DEG C. are employed. The decomposition is such that the amount of carbon produced is an index of the amount of hydrogen.
