Abstract

Gases &c., treating with electric discharges.--Ammonia is obtained from a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen by the action of dark electric discharges, the reaction chamber being heated above the critical temperature of 132 DEG C. The speed of flow of the gases is sufficiently high to prevent decomposition of the ammonia formed. A catalyst, such as cobalt nitrate, may be used, or the walls of the reaction chamber may be constructed of catalytic material.
