Abstract
286,845. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farhenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 4, 1927. Carbon.-Carbon is obtained from carbon monoxide or a gas containing it by decomposing the carbon monoxide into carbon and carbon dioxide by heating to a high temperature with the addition of a small amount of an organic compound or a carbonyl of a metal which catalytically accelerates the decomposition. Organic compounds, for example the acetyl-acetone compounds, of iron, nickel, and cobalt may be used. The catalyst may be added continuously or at intetrvals. The organic compounds may be dissolved in organic solvents, and sprayed into the gas. In an example, carbon monoxide containing iron carbonyl is passed through a high pressure furnace at a temperature of 400‹ C. and a pressure of 100 atmospheres. The residual gas is washed free of carbon dioxide and, after addition of further carbonyl, is introduced into another furnaces. The carbon obtained contains 2 per cent of iron.
