Cobalt carbonyl. - In preparing cobalt carbonvl from metallic cobalt and carbon monoxide, oxidizing agents such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapours, &c. are excluded both from the reducing gas used in preparing the metal and from the carbon monoxide. Metallic cobalt, prepared by reducing with hydrogen under pressure at 350‹ C. a precipitate obtained by adding ammonia to a solution of cobalt nitrate, is treated at 150‹ C. and under a pressure of 200 atmospheres with carbon monoxide from which free oxygen has been eliminated, for example by passage over an oxidizing catalyst such as oxides of manganese or copper or mixtures of these oxides.
