Abstract
298,714. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 28, 1927. Addition to 250,132. Cobalt carbonyl.-The process of preparing iron carbonyl described in the parent Specification is applied to the preparation of cobalt carbonyl. Carbon monoxide, or gases containing it, is passed under pressure over metallic cobalt, prepared for example by reduction of cobalt oxide or cobalt ores with hydrogen, and the cobalt carbonyl is separated by cooling before releasing the pressure. A pressure of at least 7.4 atmospheres is used with a temperature of 50‹ C.. and about 200 atmospheres with temperatures of 150-170‹ C. The bulk of the carbonyl is separated by passage through a vessel maintained at 50‹ C., and the remainder by passage through a solvent or adsorption medium or by cooling to 0‹ C. The connecting pipes are maintained at above 50‹ C. to'prevent deposition of solid carbonyl.
