255,127. Johnson, J. Y., (Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik). March 12, 1925. Mineral and tar oils.--Reducible organic compounds containing at least two carbon atoms are converted into other products by treating them in gaseous or finely-divided liquid state with gases containing hydrogen, or hydrogen and carbon monoxide, at temperature of 250-600‹ C. and under pressure of at least 50 atmospheres, in the presence of a contact mass containing metal oxides which are substantially not reduced to metal; the contact mass should be free from metals of the iron or platinum group and should not contain more than small amounts of other metals. Mixtures of oxides of metals belonging to different groups of the periodic system are suitable, for instance mixtures of oxides of the first three groups with oxides of the fourth to seventh groups, or mixtures of zinc oxide with an oxide, from another periodic group; the following mixtures of oxides are specified :-zinc and chromium, zinc and manganese, vanadium and manganese, bismuth and chromium, lead and uranium, zinc with chromium and caustic potash, aluminium and zinc. The process may be applied to the hydrogenation of liquid hydrocarbons and mineral oils.
