Abstract

293,185. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). June 9, 1927. Hydrocarbons. - For the catalytic conversion into hydrocarbons of mixtures of oxides of carbon with hydrogen, gases rich in hydrogen (e.g. methane), or steam, contact masses are used which contain (a) copper, silver or gold in the metallic state or as oxide or metallic zinc and also (b) elements of the 8th group of the periodic system or compounds of such elements. The presence of carriers of low heat conductivity is avoided. The contact mass may contain, in addition to the substances specified, metals such as manganese, cerium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, titanium, antimony, bismuth, and zirconium or their compounds. The initial gas may be water gas, producer gas, coke-oven gas, or the products of incomplete combustion of coal, hydrocarbons, tar oils, &c. The products are chiefly unsaturated hydrocarbons but some oxygen-containing compounds such as methanol may be also obtained.
