Abstract
317,808. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 18, 1928. Oxygenated organic compounds; hydrocarbons. -Organic compounds, particularly those containing oxygen such as methyl, ethyl and higher alcohels, acids, esters, ketones, and fats, and also hydrocarbons, are prepared by treating gaseous mixtures comprising oxides of carbon and an amount of hydrogen or a gas rich in hydrogen greater than that of the carbon monoxide puresent, at a pressure more than 20 atmospheres with a catalyst comprising a mixture of an element from the first sub group of the periodic system and a large amount of an element from the eighth group of the periodic system and preferably from the iron group, if desired with the addition of less than 5 per cent of a metal forming a difficultly reducible oxide. A catalyst free from cadmium or thallium is used if the gaseous mixture contains oxides of carbon in an amount exceeding 25 per cent of the amount of hydrogen present. In examples, (1) ferric nitrate, cupric nitrate and a small amount of potassium carbonate are deposited on pumice, stone, calcined, and reduced by hydrogen; a mixture of carbon monoxide with excess of hydrogen is passed over the product at 350‹ C. under pressure, giving an oil containing higher hydrocarbons, alcohols and esters and also an aqueous condensate containing lower alcohols and fatty acids, hydrocarbons of the benzine type being recovered by charcoal from the residual gases; (2) ferric nitrate and cupric nitrate are precipitated with potassium carbonate, and the precipitate is washed and dried and used as in example 1, similar products being obtained; carbon dioxide gives the same result if used instead of carbon monoxide: (3) a solution of the nitrates of iron, zinc and copper is precipitated with potassium carbonate and the precipitate dried; a mixture containing carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane and a little nitrogen is passed over this catalyst at a high temperature and pressure, a liquid being obtained in two layers, the upper one consisting chiefy of hydrocarbons the lower containing 30-40 per cent of ethyl alcohol; benzines may be recovered as in the other examples.
