Abstract
A process for the selective oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide in a gaseous mixture comprising hydrogen and from about 0.001% to about 3% by volume of carbon monoxide, which comprises adding a gas that carries enough oxygen to the gas mixture to provide a molar ratio of oxygen to carbon monoxide in the range of about 3: 1 to 0.5: 1, and passing the resulting gas mixture over a catalyst consisting essentially of from 0.01 to 5% by weight of platinum and from 0.001 to about 5% by weight of an oxide of a metal selected from the group consisting of manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel and mixtures thereof on a support at a temperature between about 0ºC and 300ºC and a pressure from atmospheric to 70kg/cm2 whereby the carbon monoxide in the gas is substantially completely converted into carbon dioxide.
