Abstract
309,625. Foster, B. W., White, A. G., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. Jan, 13, 1928. Explosives.-Relates to fuze compositions containing pitch, sulphur, and saltpetre with or without other ingredients, for example as described in Specification 297,365, and consists in heating the pitch or a mixture of the pitch and sulphur before admixture with the saltpetre, thereby avoiding any danger that might arise if the heating of the pitch were performed after admixture with the saltpetre. The following are suitable proportions : Saltpetre 73.5 parts, sulphur 13.25 parts, and pitch 13.25 parts by weight. The higher the temperature used the quicker the rate of burning of the fuze. It is rarely necessary to go beyond 250‹ C. ; and in heating a mixture of pitch and sulphur above 150‹ C., a covered vessel should be employed. Fuzes may be made by this process with burning speeds ranging from 130 to 450 seconds per yard.
