Abstract

Dihydroxypropylamine, dipropanolamine, n-butylmonoethanolamine, and other saturated aliphatic amines containing one or more hydroxyl groups and N-alkyl derivatives of said amines are nitrated for use as or in explosives, for example as described in Specification 357,581, by treating the amines at a temperature of from 0-10 DEG C. with an excess of a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and sulphuric acid, the products being recovered by pouring the resulting solutions into a mixture of ice and water. The nitrates separate out as oils or crystals; and in the latter case they may be purified by recrystallization from water, ethyl alcohol, or mixtures thereof. These nitrates may be used in conjunction with the nitrates of monoethanolamine and diethanolamine.
