Abstract
1,145,778. Acrylic acid. KNAPSACK A.G. 1 Aug., 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 35326/67. Heading C2C. Acrylic acid is isolated from the reaction products of the oxidation of propylene or acrolein by pre-cooling the hot reaction gases (300-600 C.) in a heat exchanger to 100 to 200 C., scrubbing with water at 10 to 50 C. and thereby cooling further to 30 to 90 C., and heating the resulting aqueous 10-45% acrylic acid solution to 100 to 120 C. to expel the residual acrolein. A stabilizer may be present and the resulting vapours are recycled to the oxidation zone. Examples are described using apparatus comprising a heat exchanger followed by a scrubbing column in series or in parallel with a stripping column.
