Abstract
Cyclohexanone is produced in good yield by passing a mixture of cyclohexylamine and water vapour, at a temperature of 100 DEG -180 DEG C., over a catalyst comprising copper oxide and chromium oxide and/or zinc oxide which, before use, has been reduced in a stream of hydrogen. In an example, a mixture of 69-71% of copper oxide, 29-30% zinc oxide and 0-2% chromium oxide is ground together, and thereafter reduced at a temperature of 250-350 DEG C. in a stream of hydrogen. A mixture of cyclohexylamine and water vapour in a mol ratio of 1 : 12 is then conducted over the catalyst at a temperature of 160 DEG C. The product contains cyclohexanone together with a minor proportion of cyclohexanol.
