Abstract
Hexafluorophosphoric acid is prepared by reacting phosphorus pentafluoride and hydrogen fluoride in liquid sulphur dioxide. Gaseous phosphorus pentafluoride may be passed through a liquid mixture of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride at -30 to -15 DEG C., although higher temperatures even above 20 DEG C. may be used. The ratio SO2 : HF should be 1 : 1 at -20 DEG C., or higher at higher temperature, and lower at lower temperature. The sulphur dioxide is distilled off after the reaction leaving the liquid hexafluorophosphoric acid. The reaction may be effected also between gaseous or liquid hydrogen fluoride and a solution of phosphorus pentafluoride in sulphur dioxide, or by adding hydrogen fluoride and phosphorus pentafluoride simultaneously to liquid sulphur dioxide. The phosphorus pentafluoride is prepared by heating water-free calcium fluoride with phosphorus pentoxide in a steel retort.
