Abstract

Solutions of capillary active sodium alkyl sulphate are stabilized against crystallizing or gelling by the introduction of potassium ions therein. These may be introduced (a) during the production of the sodium alkyl sulphate, in the sulphation stage or preferably by replacing a portion of the basic sodium compound used for the neutralization of the sulphite product by a basic potassium compound or (b) by adding a soluble potassium salt to the solution of the sodium alkyl sulphate. In the examples, solutions of sodium alkyl sulphates which have to a great extent lost their tendency to crystallize and/or gel are obtained by (1) neutralizing a mixture of alkyl sulphates, produced by reaction between sulphuric acid and a C10-C18 alkene mixture, with a mixture of NaOH and KOH in a molecular ratio of 3 : 1 and (2) by adding potassium sulphate, potassium chloride and potassium nitrate to solutions of sodium alkyl sulphate prepared from a C10-C18 alkene mixture.
