Abstract
Octyl alcohol is used as a froth-inhibiting agent in the preparation of hafnyl and zirconyl organic co-ordination compounds (see Group IV (b)).ALSO:An aqueous solution of a salt of the zirconyl or hafnyl ion with a strong inorganic acid, e.g. sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acid is added to an aqueous solution or suspension of a carbonate, and the reaction mixture is added to an organic acid having an ionization constant greater than that of carbonic acid to form an assumed co-ordination compound of the zirconyl or hafnyl salt of the organic acid with the other salt present. Carbonates of ammonium, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, barium, strontium, beryllium, zinc and lead, and acetic, citric, oxalic, tartaric, &c. acids are specified for use in the reaction. The clear solution obtained is evaporated to dryness at 100-125 DEG C. In the second stage of the process, frothing may be prevented by the addition of a little octyl alcohol. The products are employed for waterproofing, fireproofing, weighting, &c. textiles. Specification 569,054, [Group III], is referred to.
