Abstract

Alkali metal or ammonium salts of 3-hydroxy-propane-1-sulphonic acid are prepared by reacting allyl alcohol with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or ammonium bisulphite and corresponding neutral sulphite, in the presence of finely-divided oxygen or a substance yielding free oxygen under the reaction conditions such as H2O2, the reaction being carried out at a temperature not exceeding 40 DEG C. and under neutral to weakly alkaline conditions (up to pH 7.5) throughout. The amount of bisulphite present is preferably maintained in excess of the amount of allyl alcohol, for example, by addition of bisulphite or sulphur dioxide during the reaction. Heavy metal salts such as copper sulphate may be present as catalysts. In examples: (1) allyl alcohol is added to excess of an aqueous solution of sodium bisulphite-sulphite containing copper sulphate and the mixture is vigorously shaken with air at room temperature; (2) allyl alcohol is added dropwise to an aqueous sodium bisulphite-sulphite solution into which air is passed with vigorous stirring at - 4 DEG to + 10 DEG C. and SO2 is added to maintain substantial neutrality; (3) allyl alcohol is reacted as in (2) with an aqueous ammonium-sulphite-bisulphite solution; methods are given for working up the reaction mixture to recover the resulting ammonium hydroxy propane sulphonate, or to recover the product in the form of the pure sodium or potassium salt or of the free acid.
