Abstract
The process of the parent Specification is modified by using reaction temperatures which are greater than 40 DEG C. but lie below 100 DEG C. and utilizing a reaction mixture which contains per mol. of bisulphite, at least one-half mol. of the corresponding neutral sulphite. The oxidizing agent should preferably be used in an amount sufficient to accommodate the simultaneously occurring oxidation of the neutral sulphite to sulphate. In an example, 2 mols. of allyl alcohol and an aqueous solution of NaHSO3 (2 mols.) and Na2SO3 (1.05 mols.) are slowly added to water containing some Na2SO3 at 45-60 DEG C. while bubbling in air, the pH being maintained at 7. The resulting sodium salt of the hydroxy-propane sulphonic acid is isolated in crystalline form. The corresponding potassium and ammonium compounds are obtainable in like manner from appropriate bisulphite-sulphite mixtures.
