Abstract

Disulphides of the formula R2O2S-R-S-S-R-SO2R2 where R is an alkylene group of up to 6 carbon atoms, and R2 is amino or -OM (M being a cation) are prepared by oxidizing the corresponding mercapto-sulphonic acids or sulphonamides, for example with hydrogen peroxide or sodium perchlorate. Examples are given of the, oxidation of 3-mercapto-propane sulphonic acid, 4-mercapto-butane sulphonic acid and 4-mercapto -2- butane sulphonic acid with hydrogen peroxide followed by conversion of products to their potassium salts by treatment with aqueous potassium hydroxide. The mercapto sulphonic acids are obtained by passing aqueous solutions of the guanidinium salts through an acid ion-echange column. Guanidinium 4, 41-dithio-di (2-butane sulphonate) is prepared by oxidizing guanidinium 4-mercapto -2- butane sulphonate with hydrogen peroxide and ferrous sulphate as catalyst.
