Abstract

Disulphides of the formula: <FORM:0957311/C2/1> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl or aralkyl groups, m is 0 to 8 and M is a cation, and which contain at least 8 carbon atoms, are prepared by oxidizing mercaptans of the formula <FORM:0957311/C2/2> , for example with hydrogen peroxide or solutions of I2 in aqueous K1. Thus 4, 41-dithio-dibutyric acid is obtained from 4-mercapto-butyric acid. 4-Mercapto-butyric acid is obtained by refluxing g -butyrolactone with thiourea in the presence of hydrobromic acid.
