Abstract

1,019,223. Photographic materials. EASTMAN CO. Aug. 27, 1962 [Aug. 25, 1961], No. 32856/62. Heading G2C. A silver halide emulsion contains at least one mole per mole of silver halide of a stabiliser compressed having the group and either a radical containing a sulphur, nitrogen or oxygen atom and bonded to one of the carbon atoms in the group, or an electron withdrawing radical such as an amide, keto, nitrile, sulphonyl or carboxyl radical bonded to a beta carbon atom with reference to the sulphur atom in the group, the compound being stable at a pH below 7 but decomposing at pH above 7 to give a thiol which produces a light-stable complex of silver halide. The compound is preferably a thiazole or thiazolise of formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 5 and R 6 are hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl, R 3 and R 4 are as R 1 or hydroxyalkyl, or in Formula 2 only, R 3 and R 4 complete a benzene ring, X is an anion or an alkyl group with an anion. Alternatively the compound may be of formula where X is anion, R is alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic which may be substituted by hydroxyl, carbonyl, amino or sulphonyl radicals. This material may be imagewise exposed and developed, the development decomposes the compound to give a thiol which stabilises the undeveloped silver chloride to light.
