Abstract

1,071,674. Developing photographic silver halide materials. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Nov. 11, 1963 [Nov. 13, 1962], No. 44328/63. Heading G2C. An exposed photographic silver halide emulsion layer is developed by treatment with an alkaline solution in the presence of at least one photographic silver halide developing agent and, as development promoter, a compound of the general formula:- wherein R is H, Cl or Br, X is oxygen or represents H and OH both attached to the carbon atom, R1 is H, alkyl of 1-5 carbons or aryl and R2 is oxygen or NH. Specified compounds are tetronic acid, alpha-chlorotetronic acid, alpha-bromo-tetronic acid, D-mannosaccharo-1:4:3:6-dilactone and D-glucuronolactone. The promoter may be present in the emulsion layer or in the alkaline solution. One developing agent may be present in the emulsion layer (e.g. 1-phenyl-4-methyl-3- pyrazolidone) and another in the alkaline solution, or the developing agent may be present solely in the emulsion or in the alkaline solution.
