Abstract
A slurry of wood pulp, e.g. sulphite wood pulp, is treated with chlorine dioxide and then with a sulphite, bisulphite or thiosulphate, e.g. of sodium, potassium or ammonium, or with a substance, e.g. sulphur dioxide, capable of reacting with a compound already in the slurry to form a sulphite, bisulphite or thiosulphate. The pulp may have been subjected to an initial purification process, e.g. with chlorine or a hypochlorite followed by alkali extraction. The pulp, which may have a pH of 5 to 9, adjusted as necessary with sodium hydroxide or carbonate, is then treated with chlorine dioxide, which may be added as a gas or in aqueous solution. Sodium bicarbonate, which may be added as such or may be formed in situ by adding carbon dioxide, may be added as a buffer. The chlorine dioxide treatment may be effected at temperatures from 4 DEG to 100 DEG C. and may be followed, without intermediate washing, by treatment with a hypochlorite at temperatures from 4 DEG to 75 DEG C. and pH from 7 to 10. The treatment with the sulphite, bisulphite or thiosulphate may be effected at a pH between 1 and 10 and at a temperature of 4 DEG to 75 DEG C., and this treatment follows again without intermediate washing. The pH at the end of the process should be from 1 to 3, to obtain which sulphuric acid may be added. Specification 787,307, [Group IV (a)], is referred to.
