Abstract

Ethylene of at least 99 per cent. purity is polymerized in an aqueous emulsion of pH at least 10 and containing 0.5 to 2 per cent. of a substantially salt-free potassium soap, at least 2 per cent. potassium hydroxide and 0.8 to 2 per cent. of potassium persulphate. The reaction is carried out at a temperature of 80 DEG to 115 DEG C. and at a pressure of upwards of 6,000 p.s.i., preferably 15,000 to 18,000 p.s.i. The resulting emulsion may be broken with a few drops of sulphuric acid and unreacted ethylene may be re-used. Examples describe batchwise and continuous processes. The products have a molecular weight of 12,000 or higher and a melting point of 80 DEG to 115 DEG C.
