Abstract

Synthetic rubber is obtained by mixing butadiene with styrene, a derivative thereof or acrylonitrile and a polymerization catalyst, heating the mixture under agitation in aqueous emulsion in a closed zone to 36-40 DEG C. to create a pressure of the order of 45 lbs. per sq. in. and maintaining the mixture within that temperature range until the pressure has dropped to zero. Normally, the ratio of butadiene to olefinic compound is within the limits 3 : 1 and 1 : 3. Potassium persulphate is the preferred catalyst, but sodium and ammonium persulphates are also specified. Higher yields are obtained if to the reaction mixture is added 22 per cent of cyclohexane and at least 2 per cent of sodium hydroxide based on the weight of the monolefinic compound, and preferably also a soap solution. On preparing such an emulsion a pressure of 27 lbs. per sq. in. is produced on enclosing it and polymerization is carried out by heating to 36-40 DEG C., when the required pressure of 45 lbs. per sq. in. is obtained. The latex obtained may be coagulated by acids, e.g. 15 per cent hydrochloric acid. Specification 18054/44 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) is referred to.
