Abstract
Dodecanoyl peroxide is made by treating dodecanoyl chloride with 0.4 to 4 mols, preferably 1.5 to 3 mols, of hydrogen peroxide and 0.9 to 1.5 mols, preferably 0.95 to 1.05 mols, of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, the hydrogen peroxide being in the form of an aqueous solution containing 20 to 60 per cent, preferably 27 to 50 per cent by weight of hydrogen peroxide and the sodium or potassium hydroxide being in the form of an aqueous solution containing 10 to 45 per cent, preferably 30 to 35 per cent, by weight of sodium hydroxide or 14 to 50 per cent, preferably 35 to 40 per cent, by weight of potassium hydroxide, the reaction temperature being in the range - 10 DEG to 5 DEG C. and more suitably in the range - 8 DEG to - 2 DEG C. The reaction may be carried out batchwise or it may be carried out continuously by passing dodecanoyl chloride, aqueous hydrogen peroxide and aqueous caustic alkali separately into a reaction vessel maintained at the desired temperature. The product separates as a solid which is removed. Specification 334,531, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
