Abstract

Sorbic acid is produced by reacting ketene with crotonaldehyde in the presence of zinc sorbate as catalyst, and hydrolysing the resulting product to sorbic acid. Ketene is preferably reacted with crotonaldehyde at a temperature in the range from 0 DEG C. to 60 DEG C. with 0.1% to 5% by weight of zinc sorbate. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an inert solvent or gaseous ketene may be stirred with a mixture of liquid crotonaldehyde and zinc sorbate. The product, which is believed to be a lactone, may be hydrolysed to sorbic acid by treating with an aqueous solution of a mineral acid such as sulphuric acid, after removal of any solvent present. The hydrolysis is preferably effected as described in Specification 868,028 by heating with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, such as sodium hydroxide, to separate solid alkali metal sorbate from the resulting mixture and reacting the sorbate with an acid having a dissociation constant greater than sorbic acid to produce sorbic acid.
