Abstract

Acetic acid derivatives of the formula <FORM:1032879/C2/1> in which R denotes a straight- or branched-chain alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, M denotes hydrogen or an alkali metal, and X1 and X2 denote hydrogen or chlorine, except that X1 does not denote hydrogen if X2 denotes chlorine, are prepared by a process comprising (1) reacting benzene or an appropriate chlorobenzene with a trihalogen acetaldehyde under anhydrous conditions in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, (2) hydrolysing the produet to yield the corresponding carbinol, (3) treating the carbinol with a solution of an appropriate alkanol in an alkali-metal hydroxide or alkoxide and (4) optionally converting the alkali salt so obtained into the free acid. Thus, in Example 1, benzene is reacted with chloral in the presence of aluminium chloride and the product is hydrolysed to yield phenyltrichloromethyl carbinol; the latter is treated with a methanolic sodium hydroxide solution to yield the sodium salt of a -methoxyphenylacetic acid, which may then be acidified to yield the free acid. Other examples describe the similar manufacture of products from (1) monochlorobenzene and chloral, followed by reaction with methanol and (2) o-dichlorobenzene and chloral, followed by reaction with methanol, ethanol, propanol or isopropanol.
