Abstract
1,205,447. Aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid salts. TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc. 3 Oct., 1967 [5 Oct., 1966], No. 44945/67. Heading C2C. An alkali metal salt of a hydroxy aromatic carboxylic acid is made by reacting carbon dioxide with alkali metal phenate particles having an average particle size of less than 70 microns at an elevated temperature and in the absence of water, the carbon dioxide being passed continuously through the reaction zone to which it is admitted undiluted and removing therefrom by-product phenol. The process is preferably carried out at 100-300‹ C. An example is given of the preparation of sodium salicylate from sodium phenate but reference is made to the use of alkali metal derivatives of 1- and 2-naphthols and o-, m- and p-cresols as starting materials.
