Abstract

1373275 Carboxylic acids CHEMIE LINZ AG 17 Jan 1972 [9 Nov 1971] 2245/72 Heading C2C Aliphatic carboxylic acids (6-20 C atoms) are prepared by reacting the corresponding aliphatic alcohol with an alkali metal hydroxide at elevated pressure and temperature in a substantially anhydrous medium, running the hot melt product into water while releasing the pressure and isolating the acid from the aqueous alkali metal salt solution. Examples describe the preparation of 2-ethyl hexanoic acid from 2-ethyl hexanol and 2-ethyl-4-methyl-pentanoic acid from 2-ethyl-4-methyl-pentanol.
