Abstract

1440754 Aminocarboxylic acid salts AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 27 June 1973 [10 July 1972] 32227/72 Heading C2C An alkali metal salt of an aminocarboxylic acid is made by reacting at 390‹ to 550‹ F. a aminoalcohol with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a cadmium, nickel, palladium or zinc catalyst whilst (a) removing as an overhead vapour a mixture of water and hydrogen (b) passing the mixture into a condenser (c) recycling the condensed water and (d) throttling the vapour discharge from the condenser to maintain a pressure in the reaction zone of 125-1750 p.s.i.g. and such that the hydrogen partial pressure in the reaction zone is less than 50% of the total vapour pressure. The preferred catalyst is cadmium which may be added as free metal, cadmium oxide or as a complex (e.g. with the sodium salt of nitrilotriacetic acid). Examples describe the production of the sodium salts of nitrilotriacetic acid from nitrilotriethanol.
