Abstract

1361558 Alkali salts of 3,5-disubstituted-4- hydroxybenzoic acids and their free salts CIBAGEIGY AG 27 Sept 1972 [28 Sept 1971] 44675/72 Heading C2C A process for the manufacture of compounds of the general Formula in which R 1 represents an alkyl radical with 1 to 5 C atoms or a cyclo alkyl radical with 6 to 8 C atoms, R 2 represents an alkyl radical with 4 to 8 C atoms which is branched in the α position or a cycloalkyl radical with 6 to 8 C atoms and M represents hydrogen or an alkalimetal atom comprises treating a phenol of the general formula in which R 1 and R 2 have the above meanings, in a mixture of water and a dipolar aprotic solvent, with an alkali metal hydroxide, and reacting the reaction product, after removal of the water, without intermediate isolation and in the organic medium, at elevated temperature with carbon dioxide under atmospheric pressure and optionally liberating the acid from the resulting alkali metal salt. Examples of the dipolar aprotic solvent are dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, dimethylsulphoxide, hexamethylphosphoramide, N-methylpyrrolidone, tetramethylurea and sulpholane.
