Abstract
Salicylic acid and its alkali metal salts are prepared by the carboxylation of an alkali metal phenate in the presence of a substantial proportion of phenol wherein the carboxylation reaction is carried out at a temperature in the range of 140 DEG to 175 DEG C. under a pressure of 2 to 36 atmospheres absolute using an anhydrous phenolphenate solution which is vigorously stirred to provide fresh solution surfaces for the carbon dioxide absorption and combination with the phenate. The process is preferably continuous, the unreacted phenol-phenate solution being recycled. The product is recovered by sedimentation and filtration and is preferably washed with solvents such as toluene, xylene or chlorobenzenes the filtrate being used to dry the phenol-phenate starting material by azeotropic distillation. In an example a mixture of 1 mole of sodium phenate and 3.5 moles of phenol is dried by azeotropic distillation and carbonated at 165 DEG C. under 5 atmospheres pressure for 1 hour with stirring to give sodium salicylate.
