Abstract

A mixture of naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid and its anhydrides is prepared by oxidising a 6,7-cyclopentenoperinaphthindenone of the formula I <IMAGE> in which R is hydrogen or a lower alkyl group, using nitric acid. The reaction is carried out in a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid as solvent in the presence of oxidation catalysts, at temperatures above 100 DEG C. The reaction product obtained is isolated. The latter is an important dye precursor.
