Abstract
1381056 N,N<SP>1</SP> - Dihydroxy - benzimidazolinones and their preparation BAYER AG 26 July 1972 [29 July 1971] 34878/72 Heading C2C N,N<SP>1</SP> - dihydroxy - aromatic imidazolinones of the formula wherein An represents an aromatic ring system to which the 5-membered ring illustrated is fused, may be obtained by reacting a furoxan of the formula with formaldehyde under basic conditions and acidifying the product. Preferred compounds of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 which may be the same or different, each represent hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, halogen, a carboxyl, carbonamide, sulphonamide or nitro group, may be obtained by reacting 1 mole of the benzofuroxan with at least one mole of formaldehyde in the presence of at least two moles of a strong base, the reaction suitably being effected in water, an organic solvent, or a mixture thereof at a temperature of 0-100‹ C.
