Abstract

Vinyl chloride is polymerized in aqueous emulsion in the presence of an emulsifier and a water soluble polymerization catalyst, such as potassium persulphate, with vigorous agitation, the degree of agitation, the concentration of emulsifier, and the phase ratio of monomer to aqueous phase being so adjusted that the emulsion is maintained, at least towards the end of the reaction, at the point of incipient coagulation. Emulsifiers specified are the sodium salt of highly sulphated methyl oleate, and the alkali metal and ammonium salts of monoesters of phthalic acid or lower alkyl nuclear substituted phthalic acids with C4-C18 alkanols, such as the sodium salts of n-butyl, cetyl, and stearyl hydrogen phthalates, the emulsifier concentration preferably being less than 0.5 per cent based on monomer weight. Agitation of a violent and turbulent type, and the use of a relatively high proportion of monomer to aqueous phase favour the production of polymers of the kind desired. The use of carbon tetrachloride in the reaction mixture, and the use of an aqueous medium of pH 9.5 are also specified. The polyvinyl chloride products may have particle sizes of from 0.0005 to 0.005 mm., and form pastes with plasticizers which are smooth and spreadable. Specification 589,715 is referred to.
