Abstract

A monomeric material comprising vinyl chloride is polymerized by a process in which the monomeric material containing catalytic quantities of an oil-soluble peroxide polymerization catalyst, such as benzoyl or lauroyl peroxide, is dispersed in an aqueous phase consisting essentially of from 2 to 4 parts by volume of water per part of monomer, from 0.02 to 0.15 part by weight per part of monomer of a water-soluble methyl cellulose or methyl hydroxypropyl cellulose, from 0.02 to 0.15 part by weight per part of monomer of ionic emulsifying agent and from 0.02 to 0.15 part by weight per part of monomer of a water-soluble polyvalent metal salt coagulant for the emulsifier, the dispersion being maintained with agitation at 25 DEG to 65 DEG C. until polymerization is complete, to produce substantially uniform, free-flowing particles having high capacity for plasticiser absorption. The monomeric material may be vinyl chloride, a mixture of vinyl and vinylidene chlorides or of vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and an alkyl acrylate. The emulsifying agent may be sodium lauryl sulphate, the dihexyl ester of sodium sulpho-succinic acid, dibutyl phenyl phenol sodium disulphonate, monobutyl phenyl phenol sodium monosulphonate, an alkyl aryl sulphonate or stearyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. The polyvalent metal salt may be calcium, barium or cadmium chloride or aluminium sulphate.
