Abstract
Polymeric materials of high impact strength are made by polymerizing a mixture of a vinylidene aromatic compound and an unsaturated nitrile with a polydiene elastomer, the major proportion of the polydiene consisting of stereospecific polymer and at least 80% of the units thereof have the same structural configuration, e.g. high cis-1,4-polybutadiene and polyisoprene. Vinylidene aromatic monomers specified are styrene, vinyl toluene, alphamethyl styrene, vinyl xylene, vinyl ethylbenzene and vinyl chlorobenzene. Polymerization may be carried out by bulk, emulsion or bulk/suspension techniques. In a preferred process the polydiene is dissolved in the vinylidene aromatic-unsaturated nitrile mixture, then a small quantity of a copolymer of the monomers is added to salt out the polydiene as a fine dispersion. The examples describe polymerizing mixtures of cis-1,4-polybutadiene, styrene and acrylonitrile in bulk, either thermally or in the presence of a peroxy or azo catalyst.
