Abstract
Expandable polymer granules are made by heating discrete particles of a thermoplastic polymer with a diffusion mixture consisting of a predominant amount of water, a minor amount of a water-immiscible volatile organic fluid in which the polymer is insoluble and more than 1% (based on the weight of the polymer) of basic magnesium carbonate as a suspending agent for the polymer particles. Specified polymers are homo- and copolymers of mono-olefins such as ethylene or propylene or copolymers of these with a minor amount of another monoethylenically unsaturated monomers such as butene, vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate; or homopolymers or copolymers of monovinyl aromatic compounds such as styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl xylene, ethyl vinyl benzene, m- or p-iso propyl styrene, tert. butyl styrene, o- or p-chlorostyrene, 2,4-di-chlorostyrene, bromostyrene, fluorostyrene, copolymers of styrene and vinyl acetate or copolymers of styrene and methyl methacrylate. Volatile organic fluids specified are butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, cyclopentane, dichlorodifluoromethane, methane, monochlorotrifluoromethane, tri-chloromonofluoromethane, trifluorobromomethane, monochloropentafluoroethane, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, tetrachlorodifluoroethane, trichlorotrifluoroethane, dibromotetrafluoroethane, hexafluoroethane or octafluorocyclobutane, all of which boil below 100 DEG C. at 76 cm. of mercury. The basic magnesium carbonate may be hydromagnesite, 3MgCO3. Mg(OH)2.3H2O or a mixture of one or more of the following compounds: MgCO3Mg(OH)2 3H2O, MgCO3.Mg(OH)2.3/ba1/2/beH2O, 3MgCO3. 2Mg(OH).16H2O and 3MgCO3.Mg(OH)2. 3H2O or can be prepared by reaction in situ. It is employed in amounts greater than 1% up to 8% (based on the weight of the polymer) and preferably from 1.25 to 2.0%.
