Abstract
Graft polymers are produced from polyethylene, obtained by polymerization at a pressure of over 500 atmospheres in a tubular reaction vessel, the inlet temperature of which is over 50 DEG C., and with a radical forming initiator, by carrying out the grafting immediately after the polymerization of the ethylene and in the same vessel, the graft monomer being added 60 to 160 seconds after the addition of the initiator and at a temperature 10 DEG to 200 DEG C. above the temperature at which the ethylene enters the reaction vessel. In the examples the graft monomers and catalysts used are, respectively, (1) vinyl acetate and tertiary butyl perbenzoate, (2) acrylonitrile and dilauryl peroxide and (3) methyl methacrylate and di-tertiary butyl peroxide. Other monomers specified are styrene, acrylic acid, maleic anhydride, and carbon monoxide. Solvents e.g. paraffin oil, benzene, water, alcohols, hexane and other hydrocarbons and/or molecular weight regulators may be added with the graft monomer.
