Abstract

Graft polymers are prepared by polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer B in the presence of an anionic catalyst, and a polymer A, containing other atoms in addition to carbon and hydrogen and on to which monomer B will graft polymerize, is added either initially or after the beginning of the process but before the polymerization of monomer B has been completed. The process may be carried out in the following ways: (a) the catalyst is first reacted with polymer A which is then brought into contact with the monomer; (b) polymer A is added to a mixture of monomer and catalyst before or during polymerization of the monomer, and (c) the monomer is first polymerized under the action of the catalyst to form a "living polymer" to which polymer A is added. Monomers B specified are styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl naphthalene, isoprene, butadiene, esters, amides and nitriles of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic and methylene malonic acids and vinyl and isopropenyl methyl ketones. Polymers A may be derived from the esters, amides, nitriles and anhydrides of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids, vinyl and isopropenyl methyl ketones, chlorostyrene, aminostyrene, glycidyl allyl ether and mixtures of ethylene and carbon monoxide. The examples describe the preparation of polystyrene-polymethyl methacrylate graft polymers with the aid of naphthalene sodium as a catalyst.
