Abstract

1312325 Graft polymerization process BORGWARNER CORP 12 Oct 1970 [13 Oct 1969] 48431/70 Heading C3G A graft polymer is prepared by mixing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, a freeradical initiator, a suspending agent, water and a solution in an inert hydrocarbon solvent of a rubber derived from at least two hydrocarbon monomers each having one or more sites of ethylenic unsaturation and heating and agitating the resulting composition for at least two hours. The monomer may be added to the rubber solution, followed by addition of the water and other ingredients, which may also comprise a chain transfer agent. In the examples, (a) ethylene-propylene rubber or styrene-butadiene rubber is grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile and (b) ethylene-propylene-unconjugated diene rubber is grafted with styrene, or a mixture thereof with acrylonitrile and/or methyl methacrylate. The solvent used is benzene, the suspending agent is methyl cellulose, the catalyst is benzoyl peroxide and the chain transfer agent is tert.-dodecyl mercaptan.
