Abstract

1313836 Separating high molecular weight ethylene polymers MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 26 April 1971 [27 April 1970 13 Aug 1970] 11421/71 Heading C3P High molecular weight polymer fractions are separated from reaction products obtained by polymerizing ethylene, optionally with other monomers, at 100‹ to 400‹ C. and 700 to 5000 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> in the presence of an initiator, by subjecting the reaction product to a pressure of 550 to 1500 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> at a temperature at which further polymerization does not occur and at which a high molecular weight polymer fraction is precipitated, and separating the precipitated polymer. One or more separation steps in the above range may be followed by one or more separation steps at pressures in the range 250 to 300 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>. Optional comonomers include acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters, amides and nitriles, vinyl and vinylidene halides, vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, vinyl ketones and N-vinylimides; and polymerization may be effected in the presence of conventional peroxy and azo initiatcrs, and hydrocarbon, aldehyde, ketone and chlorinated hydrocarbon chain transfer agents. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated, and examples describe the separation of polyethylene prepared in the presence of (I to III) di-t-butyl peroxide and propylene and (IV) oxygen and propylene; and of ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymer prepared in the presence of (V) oxygen and propylene. The products may be cross-linked, e.g. with dicumyl peroxide.
