Abstract

A cement for bonding a glass surface to another glass surface or to the surface of a transparent rigid plastic sheet comprises a polymerizable material which is liquid at the cementing temperature and which comprises methyl methacrylate together with a minor proportion of at least one of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate in any one of the forms hereinafter defined, said cement containing less than 4 mols of dissolved gas/100 grams of liquid cement at 25 DEG C. and atmosphere pressure. The forms in which the polymerizable material comprising methyl methacrylate together with a minor proportion of at least one of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate may be used are:-1. Wholly monomeric mixture of methyl methacrylate together with a minor proportion by weight of at least one of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate. 2. Partially polymerized mixtures of methyl acrylate together with a minor proportion by weight of at least one of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate. 3. Solutions of copolymers of methyl methacrylate with a minor proportion of at least one of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate in a mixture of monomers corresponding in nature and proportions to the monomers forming the copolymer. 4. Solutions of homopolymers and copolymers of any of methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate in mixtures of methyl methacrylate with one or both of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate, the proportion of methyl methacrylate units whether present as monomers or as homopolymer or as a component of a copolymer being the major component by weight of the total monomer plus polymer present. The glass surface or surfaces are treated with vinyl trichlorosilane, or a solution of vinyl trichlorosilane in an organic solvent e.g. petroleum ether, toluene, benzene or xylene, the cement is then interposed between the surfaces, whereupon the cementing layer is subjected to polymerizing conditions. The cement may be polymerized by any of the known methods for polymerizing methyl methacrylate i.e. catalyst systems that are activated by heat or light. The excess of dissolved gas in the cement is removed by any suitable means and particularly by means whereby the liquid is agitated and subjected to conditions of reduced pressure. The cement preferably contains from 15-45% by weight of acrylate units based on the combined weight of acrylate and methacrylate units. Additional monomers may be present e.g. styrene in amounts of less than 5%. The cement may also contain from 0.8-15% of a crosslinking agent e.g. an ester of a polyhydric alcohol with a monobasic unsaturated carboxylic acid or an ester of an unsaturated alcohol with a dibasic carboxylic acid.
